The first thing my friend and I did when I arrived in NOLA was make a beeline for The Camellia Grill. Sitting alongside college students and their parents (it was graduation time after all) at the counter, facing the grill, I could see why this restaurant was a New Orleans favorite. The cooks were incredibly friendly, which provided a warm welcome to the South for a girl coming from the chilly North. The cheeseburger and chocolate cherry freeze hit the spot after a long six hours of travel.
What really got me was the picture at the cash register of the closed Camellia Grill post-Katrina covered in Post-it notes all urging the establishment to reopen. They’ve since turned the notes into a piece of art that hangs in the restaurant.
